A Thoughtful Approach to Design.
Founded in 1991 by David Miles, The Drawing Board was built on a commitment to thoughtful design and enduring client relationships. Today, the firm is led by his son, Peter Miles, alongside partners Joey Barrick and Filipe Silva. Together, they carry forward the company’s legacy while continuing to evolve its vision—blending experience, collaboration, and technical expertise to shape architecture that stands the test of time.
Joey Barrick
A Baltimore native, Joey earned his Master of Architecture from The Catholic University of America and has spent over a decade living and working in Washington, DC. His experience spans a diverse range of project types, including multifamily residential, corporate retail, and high-end custom homes, with work recognized in both local and international design competitions in places such as Brooklyn, Zenica, and Kyiv.
Grounded in a deep curiosity about how people experience the spaces they inhabit, Joey approaches each project with a focus on creating architecture that goes beyond function—thoughtfully balancing form and purpose to shape spaces that feel both intentional and impactful.
Peter Miles
Peter, a native of Annapolis, Maryland, earned his Master of Architecture from The Catholic University of America and has been immersed in the family business since his school years. His experience spans Annapolis, Washington, DC, and the surrounding region, giving him a deep understanding of both local context and client needs. He brings a practical, hands-on perspective to each project, shaped by years of working closely with both clients and builders.
His work has been recognized in several international design competitions, including a memorial for Babyn Yar in Kyiv, Ukraine—an achievement that led to the design of additional memorial projects throughout the country. This experience reflects a thoughtful, design-driven approach grounded in both technical rigor and a strong sense of narrative and place.
Filipe Silva
Born in Brazil and raised in the DC metro area, Filipe brings a global perspective shaped by both his background and experience. He holds dual master’s degrees from The Catholic University of America—a Master of Architecture and a Master of City and Regional Planning. From an early age, he gained hands-on experience through his family’s construction company, developing a deep understanding of how projects come together from the ground up.
With over a decade of experience spanning residential, multifamily, commercial, retail, hospitality, civic, and planning work, Filipe approaches each project with both technical expertise and creativity. His work is defined by an innovative mindset, a strong command of construction, and a commitment to quality that has earned the trust of clients and collaborators alike.
Design Approach
Our process is thoughtful, collaborative, and deeply rooted in understanding how you live—guiding each project from initial concept to a fully realized home that feels both intentional and uniquely yours.
-
Every project begins with listening. We take the time to understand how you live, what inspires you, and the goals you have for your home—both aesthetically and functionally. This phase lays the foundation for a design that feels deeply personal and thoughtfully considered.
-
Building on what we’ve learned, we develop a clear design direction that reflects your vision. Through space planning, material exploration, and initial selections, we begin to define the look and feel of the project. This is where ideas take shape and the overall story of the home begins to emerge.
-
We thoughtfully layer in details, refining every element from finishes to furnishings. Each decision is considered in context, ensuring cohesion, balance, and a sense of intention throughout the home. Collaboration remains central as we evolve the design into a fully realized plan.
-
With the design finalized, we manage the logistics—sourcing materials, furnishings, and working closely with trusted vendors and trades. We oversee orders, timelines, and communication to ensure every element is executed with precision. Our goal is to make the process seamless and well-managed from start to finish.
-
Installation is where the vision comes to life. We oversee every detail, from furniture placement to the final styling moments, ensuring the home feels complete and considered. The result is a space that is not only beautiful, but truly reflective of how you live.
Chevy Chase Kitchen Update
The client’s previously described “ugliest kitchen in the world” has been completely transformed into a bright, welcoming space that encourages gathering and conversation. By introducing abundant natural light, carefully considered proportions, and classic architectural details, the kitchen now reads as a timeless, elegant extension of the home. Large windows enhance the connection to the outdoors, while the refined design complements the neoclassical style of the rest of the house, creating a harmonious and inviting environment where people truly want to spend time.
