Chartwell Addition
Client Insight
The homeowner needed to adapt the house for multigenerational living by adding a first-floor bedroom for her mother, while also creating a larger, more social living space for her children and their friends. At the same time, the existing home’s awkward proportions and lack of architectural cohesion presented a challenge—she wanted the addition to feel intentional and unified, not like an afterthought.
Design Approach
The design rebalanced the home by using the addition to correct its proportions and create a more cohesive overall form. Relocating the garage allowed the new bedroom to connect more naturally to the main living areas, while a new mudroom linked old and new spaces seamlessly. Exterior updates—including adjusted rooflines, dormers, and a layered shingle palette—helped unify the architecture and embrace the home’s character with greater refinement. Inside, targeted updates elevated the existing spaces, while new interiors were designed to feel consistent yet more polished, creating a balanced dialogue between old and new.
