St. Michael’s Artist Studio

Client Insight

After retiring to St. Michaels, the clients sought to create a dedicated artist’s studio alongside a comfortable guest house to accommodate frequent out-of-town visitors. With two adjoining properties already in place, they saw an opportunity to thoughtfully expand and better connect their living and creative spaces.

Design Approach

Working within the existing footprint of the smaller home, we designed a single-room addition that extends across the rear of the guesthouse, creating a light-filled studio environment. A sloped shed roof oriented to the north allows for clerestory windows, bringing in consistent, natural light ideal for artistic work.

A generous porch links the studio to the pool and outdoor living areas, reinforcing a seamless indoor-outdoor connection. The existing structure continues to house the bedrooms, while a carefully designed connector between old and new introduces a functional zone with an additional bathroom and utility space—enhancing both livability and flexibility for guests.
